Sexual Harassment and Diversity in the Workplace :: Workplace Diversity
Presentation Workforce assorted variety is another term in business and industry. It is a term that is as yet phenomenal in different territories of the world. Assorted variety can be considered by taking two alternate points of view. Right off the bat, there are those major individual qualities that make everybody on the earth special for instance incapacity, character among others. Also, there are those distinctions that exist dependent on bunch participation for instance race, ethnicity, and social contrasts among others (Barak, 131). Assorted variety is being a partner of either an indistinguishable or detectable gatherings that are accepted to be standard in the general public (Barak, 131). Pluralism, then again, is the dissemination of matchless quality among the numerous gatherings of the general public (Carroll and Buchholtz, 8). At the end of the day, pluralism implies decentralization and expansion of power from a gathering of not many people from the top to the greater part at the base of the cultural pecking order. Working environment decent variety achieves an assortment of moral issues in the work environments. For instance, inappropriate behavior because of sexual direction, prejudice and ethnicity, sex issues among others. Inappropriate behavior is described by irritating lewd gestures and insinuations implied for other people; who feel that such activities abuse their privilege or meddle with their work. Individuals participate in lewd behavior in light of their sexual wants, or when, they need some sexual favors; provoked by the predominant circumstance. For instance, workers might be pestered explicitly, by their administrators, with the goal that they get advancement. Inappropriate behavior is one of the moral issues that face administrators and workers the same. In the event that it is seen in an association, it can strain the connection between the association and the general public (Carroll and Buchholtz, 4). My own view As to provocation, I for one believe that individuals need to have a progressively developed method of managing issues of sexuality. We have to go about them all the more cautiously and secretly. Lewd gestures can be made given the two people assent on the equivalent. These advances ought not be pegged on specific desires on bias in work environment however can be for the progression of the parentage or for the reasons for reproduction. Different social practices have seen different types of sexual connections that exist inside the general public. As a Christian, I believe isn't right and uncalled for to participate in unreliable sexual practices like inappropriate behavior. We should remember that it is against Christian educating and against the ten decrees of God.

The Death Penalty is Not Effective (Essay Sample) Content: The Death Penalty is Not Effective[Name][Institutional Affiliation] The Death Penalty is Not Effective Many states in the United States of America and across the world still admit the death penalty in their systems of justice. Most of them view it as the best form of punishment and a possible deterrent to criminals and would be criminals. However, there is a wide divide between supporters and opponents of the death penalty. Despite many beliefs that it can scare away individuals intending to commit murder and other capital crimes, various studies indicate that there is no direct relationship between capital punishment and reduction in capital crime. If anything, other scholars point out that comparative analysis between states admitting death penalty and those that do not indicate otherwise. Cases of murder are less prevalent in states without capital punishment (Radelet Lacock, 2008). Considered on legal, ethical, and functional grounds, the death penalty is not eff ective in deterring crime and as a form of punishment. As analyzed by Banks (2012), there are six outstanding reasons why offenders are punished by the law. The first two relate to the punished offender and other possible offenders. As it stops the offender from committing further crimes, it also discourages others from the same. The third and fourth reasons focus on offended victims and the society at large. Besides clearly informing victims, relatives, and others that the society does not approve of evil against them, the law seeks to protect all of them from such evil. Finally, punishment gives offenders opportunities to reconcile and depart from evil. It seeks to express the fact that punishment is deserved, and instituting laws must be adhered to. Reviewing capital punishment against these justifications reveals some astounding realities. Whereas it successfully satisfies three, it only achieves partial satisfaction of two and no satisfaction at all for one. It is true that cap ital punishment informs victims of the societys disapproval of evil in an effective way. Similarly, it protects the society and impacts the understanding of the need to obey laws. However, numerous studies indicate that very few individuals fail to commit murder because they dread capital punishment (Radelet Lacock, 2008). This is because the drives that make individuals commit murder may not closely associate with the possibility of being caught or punished. In as much as the death penalty may stop an individual from committing more crimes, this may not be the case for other offenders as circumstantial causes of murder differ substantially (Bedau Cassell, 2004). These two reasons satisfied partially form the very basis of capital punishment. Although punishment should allow offenders room for reconciliation and making amends, the death penalty eliminates this by taking away life. An article by Radelet and Lacock (2008) concurred that the death penalty is not an effective way of d eterring murder and other heinous crimes. After interviewing leading criminologists from the American Society of Criminology it emerged that 94% believed that not much evidence supported the fact that the death penalty is a crime deterrent. Managing Jobs and Clients as a Freelance Writer
As a freelance writer, you depend on your clients for your existence. No clients, no career. But thereââ¬â¢s a number of ways to take care of your clients that can mean the difference between having a nice roster of high-paying clients versus perpetually hunting clients from the depths after they go belly-up. In this article, weââ¬â¢ll take a look at some ways that you can maintain your client base thatââ¬â¢s as easy as remembering to feed the goldfish. ââ¬ËNew Client, First Assignmentââ¬â¢ Rule Ok, so youââ¬â¢ve managed to snag a client through your persuasive salesmanship and the client has assigned you the first project. Congrats! If you ask me, the best thing you can do next is knock out the easiest assignment and send it to the client as soon as possible. If itââ¬â¢s an article with little research involved, I try to aim for a 24-hour window to send off a finished assignment. The goal is to establish yourself as a qualified writer capable of being trusted as soon as possible. Once youââ¬â¢ve secured the trust and displayed your capabilities, you can move on to juicier assignments and larger amounts of work. Failing to nail the first assignment may have the client looking elsewhere for freelancers with a quicker turnaround and a better quality output. Deadlines If thereââ¬â¢s one thing to adhere to, itââ¬â¢s your clientââ¬â¢s deadlines. However, if youââ¬â¢re going to miss a deadline for whatever reason, try to communicate this to the client as far ahead of time as possible. This is just Freelancing 101. But let me clarify a fact of the business: unless the deadlines are firmly tied to direct money-making opportunities on a timetable, just remember that deadlines are arbitrary. And therefore, theyââ¬â¢re also flexible. Clients underestimate the time involved just as often as freelancers brag about their output turnaround; what matters is that the assignment gets done, but itââ¬â¢s up to you to make sure that youââ¬â¢re both on the same page. Iââ¬â¢ve found that if Iââ¬â¢ve renegotiated a 2nd deadline, that then becomes the final deadline. Miss that and you may as well say goodbye to the client. Just like the last ââ¬Ënew client, first assignmentââ¬â¢ rule, youââ¬â¢re going for trust. Treat Them REALLY Well How you treat your clients tends to reflect how successful and busy you are as a freelancer. Kelly James-Enger, author of The Six-Figure Freelancer, says that freelancers should treat their clients not only with the Golden Rule (ââ¬Å"treat people the way you want to be treatedâ⬠), but that you should go above that and lavish them with the Platinum Rule: Exceed their expectations and go the extra mile. This is also discussed extensively in The Online Writersââ¬â¢ Companion, from FWUââ¬â¢s own PJ Aitken. If you can offer something to the client that makes their life easier, do so. If you can suggest other ways their business can improve, do so (but be nice). If you can give them a social media mention, go for it. The ways are endless, but go further than just chasing after a paycheck. What your goal should be is to make yourself irreplaceable, becoming a larger part of their business and thus being worth more. Everyone loves a bonus, and this gives you more leverage when negotiating rate increases. Plus, itââ¬â¢s just good karma. Communication It helps to find out the communication style of your clients and speak their language, so to speak. Some clients are micromanagers that want daily communication and day-by-day updates on your progress. Others are laconic types that give out vague assignments and expect fully-formed ideas that have read their mind. Itââ¬â¢s up to you to mirror their needs and provide what theyââ¬â¢re looking for. However, donââ¬â¢t get taken advantage of. Itââ¬â¢s wise to communicate often, but donââ¬â¢t give an opportunity for them to breathe down your neck and micromanage you. Vice versa, if you create an assignment thatââ¬â¢s not up to par because of the clientââ¬â¢s vague directions, ask until you get the information you need. Itââ¬â¢s up to you to ââ¬Å"trainâ⬠your clientââ¬ânot all of them are experienced in efficient delegation and some come across as downright rude. Fix it and let them know that youââ¬â¢re not just words on a screen. Another tip I find is that sometimes I have to not answer an email immediately or respond to a Skype message as a way of asserting my authority. Remember that each time that you spend communicating with a client, youââ¬â¢re not workingââ¬ânor are you getting paid. Unless they have some pressing concern or new assignment offers, they can wait. The only exception to this rule is not to ââ¬Å"ghostâ⬠your client. Disappearing off the face of the earth makes clients worry and lose trust in your output, even if your work is top-notch and submitted right on the deadline. Whatââ¬â¢s the Priority-Level of this Client? Not all clients are created equal. Some clients can be a treat to work with, while others seem to squeeze as much lifeforce as they can per interaction. Factoring deadlines in with ââ¬Å"pain-in-the-neckâ⬠factor is how I determine the ââ¬Å"priority-levelâ⬠of the client. High-priority clients get the fullest amount of my attention and services; low-priority clients are ones that I consider placeholders until something better comes my way. Money isnââ¬â¢t always the determining factor. If this sounds overly harsh, just think of it the other way: if you had hired a freelancer that was giving you a hard time or was slow to provide consistent work, would you think twice to find a replacement? I didnââ¬â¢t think so. It comes down to how replaceable the client really is. Dovetail Your Assignments Try to always stay busy with clients. Finding new clients is basically uncompensated work and thatââ¬â¢s a waste of your resources. On the other hand, just at itââ¬â¢s more work to keep searching for more clients, it is equally painful for clients to find capable freelancers. I find that if Iââ¬â¢m not regularly receiving assignments, the client begins to look like a dead-end. However, there are a few strategies that I use to keep working coming in, dovetailing new assignments with a minimal amount of downtime: Try to sell your other writing-related skills, like web design or copyediting, to your pre-existing clients. Suggest strategies that your clientââ¬â¢s competition is using to edge them out. They may accept your offer to pull ahead with more assignments. If youââ¬â¢ve been working consistently for a client, regularly ask for more work on a set day. For most of my clients, I choose to send a message on a Sunday just to remind them that on Monday, Iââ¬â¢m ready to crank out more work for them. Related to the previous point, when reminding clients, I try to emphasize that I do have other clients and a set workload; if theyââ¬â¢re slow to respond, I may have to go shift my priorities towards ââ¬Å"activeâ⬠clients. The kicker of this point is that you can bluff, tooââ¬âsometimes clients donââ¬â¢t want to lose a freelancer and may throw you a bone. Following Up If a clientââ¬â¢s project is coming to a close, remember to ask them to consider you for any additional work in the future. Thatââ¬â¢s a good way of initiating an opportunity to follow up. I usually wait four to six weeks before contacting a client again. If they say ââ¬Å"no,â⬠then I choose to write them off. If they say ââ¬Å"maybe,â⬠I consider that a good sign and ask when would be a good time to contact them in the future. And if they say ââ¬Å"yes,â⬠well, you know what to doâ⬠¦ Also, ask if they know any other people that are looking for similar work. This is win-win because the client gets to look like a hero connecting a good freelancer with a needing client, gaining favor with both. Plus, LinkedIn connection brownie points. Cut ââ¬ËEm Loose Thereââ¬â¢s plenty of fish in this Freelancer Sea. Remember the free part of freelancing. Iââ¬â¢ve had several clients that have dragged their feet to pay me on time (or within a reasonable period), expect more results for less pay, or were just simply clients that I took upon when work was slow for lower-rates. Whatever the reason, there comes a time when I have to deliberately cut a client loose. Itââ¬â¢s never a fun process, but I make sure that I donââ¬â¢t burn bridges. It can feel great to really stick it to ââ¬Ëem on the way out, but you never know when you might need that same client in the future. Hiding the Help If youââ¬â¢ve outsourced some of your work, make sure not to give away the contact info of who helped you complete the assignment.à It may seem like an unethical thing to do, but Iââ¬â¢ve had clients try to cut me out of the deal and go straight to the source. The way I justify this is this: what compensation do I receive for being an intermediary? If Iââ¬â¢m not offered anything to bring the two parties together, then why should I go out of my way to do so? Even working as a middleman has its advantages for both parties, as you already know what your client wants and what your freelancer is capable of producingââ¬âthatââ¬â¢s the price of your contribution. Iââ¬â¢ve elaborated on what the clientââ¬â¢s initial instructions were and ââ¬Å"translatedâ⬠that to my subcontractor. That is the value I have as a middleman. The other part to ââ¬Å"hiding the helpâ⬠is that if your subcontractor is working on materials that contain your clientââ¬â¢s information, they probably have the ability to cut you out of the equation, but probably havenââ¬â¢t. Why? Because you may be able to source the subcontractor with more work in the future and this would be a definite dealbreaker. Still, if youââ¬â¢re worried, one method is to just omit the relevant contact information and insert it into the document later. Meeting Your Clients in Person I hate to draw parallels between online dating with freelancing online, but if youââ¬â¢ve met your clients online, why not meet them in person? If you ask me, the written word and Skype interviews tend to leave out crucial parts of the client-to-freelancer modus operandi. Words are easily misconstrued, and Skype interviews tend to have the weird latency lag that makes conversation seem like ââ¬Å"I go, then you go, then I go, then you go.â⬠Seeing your clientââ¬â¢s business in person opens up opportunities that you may not have considered. For instance, I met up with one of my local clients that I sourced off of Craigslist. From my initial impression, I thought that I was working directly for this company; in reality, I was being subcontracted through a temp agency. What a surprise when I realized that I was being farmed out! Were my rates too low? How much were local companies willing to pay so I could offer a competitive rate? I took note. That aside, the simple fact of exchanging words in person strengthens the rapport. Itââ¬â¢s like datingââ¬âeach date ratchets up the involvement and youââ¬â¢ll soon find yourself in a nice client-to-freelancer romance, if you will. Like itââ¬â¢s been mentioned throughout this article, trust is its own type of currency when it comes to freelancing. Plus, if youââ¬â¢re wondering, having lunch with your client is tax-deductible. * * * Okay, youââ¬â¢re going to kill me: if youââ¬â¢ve thought this was a ââ¬Å"how-toâ⬠guide, youââ¬â¢re a little wrong. This is my how-to guide that fits my freelancing personality. As much as I strive to be a factotum of freelancer knowledge, I wager that your approach may yield better results. Your results may vary.

To even have hope on fixing a computer, or what we re going to be working on, a laptop, you need to diagnose the PC. We begin with remembering what we last did on our laptop, what we re doing, what and how many things we we re last running, or what did we last download. If we rule out the software, the virtually installed programs, operating system, apps, etcetera, wasn t attacked, faulty, or overworked, then we have to check the hardware. The Observations Of Albert Einstein s Theory Of Relativity
The most recent confirmation of Albert Einsteinââ¬â¢s theory of relativity was the detection of gravitational waves. This discovery revolutionised our understanding of science and the universe. It has also unlocked the potential for future scientific endeavours especially in the field of gravitational wave astronomy. Spacetime is the union of the three spatial dimensions and the one time dimension into a continuum1. According to general relativity, gravity is the curvature of this spacetime due to the presence of mass. The greater the present mass the greater the curvature. Extremely large changes in spacetime curvature create wave like ripples in spacetime that propagate at light speed.2 These extremely large changes can occur due to black holes merging together. These ripples are gravitational waves, and can be detected. In 1916 gravitational waves were predicted by Albert Einstein in his theory of general relativity.1 Gravitational waves were first detected on 14 September 2015 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).3 This observatory consists of two installations, one in Hanford and one in Livingston, America. The waves detected were caused when two black holes of 36 and 29 solar masses merged. LIGO splits a laser beam down 2 perpendicular 4 kilometre tunnels, that are reflected back to their origin where they recombine at a detector. The two light beams travel the same distance, so normally when they recombine they cancel each other out. Thou Mayest free essay sample
I have been the ruler of a lost kingdom, a time traveler to unknown worlds, and have trekked across the uncharted wilderness of the Alaskan frontier. Occupation title? Avid reader. As a young child, I devoured any pieces of literature within the reach of my stubby hands. I become familiar with subjects from the adventures of Harry Potter to the rediscovery of historical artifacts as presented by National Geographic. While reading I could escape my mundane existence into surreal fantasies. The value of reading is often underestimated. The goal is not simply to be entertained or to memorize plots and characters; it is to expand your own mental and creative capabilities. Books have started revolutions, changed entire societal orders, and they have made me who I am. One of my favorite quotes in literature is the piece of wisdom that Lee states in East of Eden, ââ¬Å"But the Hebrew word, the word timshelââ¬âââ¬ËThou mayestââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬âthat gives a choice. I can choose to be the best version of myself. I am an adventurer at heart and I wish to discover the world through my own terms. But I am not as much the valorous Don Quixote as his pragmatic side-kick, Sancho Panza. Although I may stumble in life, and even fall to my knees, it gives me satisfaction to know that these were my mistakes. The author is not the only person who confirms Esparzas endowment in the field of boxing, others also praised her ability. To prove his claim, Rich gives the myriad information in the essay to assert more of Esparzas talent. Everyone has at least one natural talent in a certain field. We will write a custom essay sample on Marlen Esparza or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Some people show their talent very early when they are kids, but some people just find their talent until they become adults. Marlen Esparzaââ¬â¢s talent was revealed in the sports field when she was youngand the author suggests, Marlen was always desperate to compete against her brothersâ⬠(851). Although Esparzaââ¬â¢s father desired one of his sons become a boxing legend, his younger daughter had an interest in boxing than his sons. Boxing is a sport that requires strong, healthy and high endurance, but Marlen who is a girl did not fearless when she dared to fight boxing with her brothers. This action showed a passion of a young girl who likes playing boxing that is mainly for boys instead of play activities for girls. In addition, a girl who could beat her brothersdemonstrated that she is very strong and have good stamina to pursue boxing. Inside her, talent seed had been budding when she was young. In his essay, Rich maintains, ââ¬Å"She attacked that other little girl like a pit bull, like a grasshopperâ⬠¦Her determination and stamina surprised me. That other girl was trying to survive! â⬠(851). Bull is a symbol of strength, aggressive, eager to win, and if it see the red color, it will butt against an opponent. While Marlen fights with the other girls, she looks like a bull with full of energetic to win, ready to strike and hit the opponent. If the other girls were trying to survive to pass exercises, Marlen did not get tired or bewail the painful difficulties, and she was more and more vigorous during exercises. Indeed, only those who have a gift for boxing and passion as Marlen, who can train hard without a break. She also proved that talent can just develop if people practice, cultivate everyday and never give up. Nathaniel reveals in essay that ââ¬Å"Marlen Esparza is currently ranked ninth in the worldâ⬠(853). It wasnot easy to be one of the top ten in the world, but Marlene already did that. For over 12 years, she has spent countless time to practice with hope that will attend the exams in the country and international. Her talent was recognized when she won the bronze medal in an International Olympic Committee at the London Games in 2012. In international competitions, she defeated opponents who were very proficient in boxing from other countries, so this proved that she is a great player with good technique and quick reflex while playing. Moreover, her talent has represented the younger generation potential of the United States to attend in the international arena. Everyone thought she had everything after she achieved high performance in competitions, but actually she also has to confront obstacles in life. She shared in the essay thatââ¬Å"I get mad. I donââ¬â¢t date. I havenââ¬â¢t gone out in a long timeâ⬠¦I donââ¬â¢t have Facebook, because Iââ¬â¢d be jealous of everybody. I donââ¬â¢t want to know what Iââ¬â¢m missing. â⬠(854). All of her time, she just practices every day becauseboxing seems to be all to her, and it also took away her free time that perhaps she can go out with friends or date with a guy. An ordinary girl can do anything they like, but Esparzas talent made her become a special girl. Behind the medal of the competition, the price for the medal is sometimes lonely when she does not have friends and jealous of normal girls. For this reason, she did not feel very happy from her victory. If she can balance her life between boxing and entertainment, she will not be pressured and feel sad anymore. Additionally, the author maintains, ââ¬Å"Esparza plans on quitting after the Olympics because while male fighters can earn millions, female professionals rarely make more than $10,000 and often must fight abroadâ⬠(855). In todays society, people are still sexist in sports field because they think men are stronger and important, so they have more priority for men. Both men and women must rigorous exercise in the long time, but the amount of money of the women is very small for a title. Not only Marlen but also female fighters feel underprivileged and unfair because they cannot live with little money. As a consequence, the thought of quitting sports is often seen in the female athletes since the society do not really have respect for their talent. The gender discrimination is the real reasonto prevent the development of female talent. Esparza intended to quit boxing after the International Olympic Committee, and she will go to medical school, but noone make sure that it will truly better for her or not. Her talent is boxing which is a sport that she is very passionate. More than 12 years to pursue boxing, she love boxing and it gives her power to do intense exercise. She is really herself when she lives with boxing because it is her dream. On the other hand, if she went to medical school, it will be a completely different field. Marlen cannot study well, and it will waste time to study when she does not have an interest in the medical. She will be an anesthesiologist all her life, but if one day, when she misses boxing, she cannot go back because numerous other young talents have developed at that time.

Monostasm essays
Monostasm essays Christian monasticism had its origin in Egypt. In the second and third centuries, Christians sought to lead ascetic and holy lives in the deserts of Egypt. Some lived alone as hermits, and others formed communes where they devoted themselves to the pursuit of holiness rather than worldly success. Christianity became legal in the fourth century, and the monastic lifestyle became popular throughout the Roman Empire. In the early days of monasticism, each community developed its own rules, procedures, and priorities. Some communities demanded strict lifestyles and some did not, which resulted in Monks frittering away their time or wandered aimlessly from one monastic house to another. These haphazard conditions prevented monasteries from mounting effective Christian missions. The early monastic movement was strengthened by St Benedict of Nursia in 529. He prepared a set of regulations known as Benedicts Rule that he founded at Monte Cassino. The rule did not permit extreme asceticism, but required monks to take vows to lead communal, celibate lives under the absolute direction of the abbot who supervised the monastery: poverty, chastity, and obedience became prime virtues for the Benedictine monks. The Rule also called for monks to spend their time in prayer, meditation, and work. Hours were divided up during the day into periods of study, reflection, and manual labor. They were called, matins, lauds, prime, teree, sext, nones, uespers, and compline. The discipline introduced by the Rule strengthened monasteries. They became a dominant feature in the social and cultural life of Western Europe throughout the middle ages. Monasteries helped to restore order in the country and expand agriculture production. They accumulated large landholdings, as well as authority over serfs working their lands. Mostly in France and Germany, abbots of monasteries dispatched teams of monks and serfs to clear forests, drain swamps, and p...

Communication Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 2
Communication - Essay Example 277 & 278). It is the objective of this report to recommend on the most effective approaches for conflict management. It would initially identify sources of intergroup conflict; prior to presenting the effects of conflict on groups. Finally, conflict resolution and prevention strategies would be expounded as recommendation for effective conflict management. The environment of the organization and the technology shape the nature of relationships among groups, as well as the extent of interdependence that is necessary. Environment and technology together primarily define the dimensions of intergroup relationships that could propagate tendencies for conflicts to occur. As emphasized, ââ¬Å"the dimensions of intergroup relationships determine the frequency, intensity, and scope of conflict; where the dimensions include: (1) differences in goals; (2) task interdependence; (3) resource interdependence; (4) incentive and reward system; (5) task ambiguity; (6) differences in personal background and traits; and (7) differences in power and statusâ⬠(Martires & Fule, 2004, pp. 284-289). As such, managers have the responsibility to evaluate the root causes of conflicts in the work setting; and be equipped with the knowledge to address and resolve these. If conflicts remain unresolved, chaos would naturally exist. Conflicts within members of a group or among departments would affect the performance and productivity of members; which in turn, would be detrimental in the achievement of organizational goals. Conflicts could cause a decline in productivity, absenteeism, miscommunication, low morale, and inability to achieve goals effectively. As such, conflicts are costly and could impair the generation of profits. To resolve conflicts, management must be aware of different conflict resolution strategies. The various ways to resolve conflicts include: (1) use of

Triaxial method Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Triaxial method - Lab Report Example Insitu soil material is tested in during subsurface phase. This phase is an investigation stage that will help prepare design a waste containment facility or structures. The tests done will be used for structural fill, recompacted soil layers, and any other engineering components. These forms of tests are called conformance tests and are performed before any construction starts. Appropriate ASTM test methods must be followed when performing tests of materials. The common tests applied in geotechnical investigation are; Standard Test Method for Direct Shear Test of Soils Under Consolidated Drained Conditions ASTM 3080, Standard Test Method for Unconsolidated-Undrained Triaxial Compression Test on Cohesive Soils ASTM 2850, Standard Test Method for Unconfined Compressive Strength of Cohesive Soil ASTM 2166, Standard Test Method for Consolidated-Undrained Triaxial Compression Test for Cohesive Soils ASTM 4767 and Standard Test Method for One-Dimensional Consolidation Properties of Soils ASTM D 2435.1.0Ã Theoretical BackgroundThe purpose of this test is to establish the undrained shear strength of soil and applied to scenarios where fine-grained soils will be saturated and loading expected at a rate that overwhelms the ability of soil materials to dissipate excess pore water pressure. The author states that the shear strength parameters of fine and course grained soils in undisturbed or remolded state is quickly established. In a situation where the rate of construction is slow and allows the soil.

The Impacts of Oil Spills on Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems Essay Example for Free
The Impacts of Oil Spills on Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems Essay Buy custom Impacts of Oil Spills on Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems essay In this paper am going to examine the factors contributing to oil spills, and their effects on marine and terrestrial ecosystems. This addition of phytoplankton leads to depletion of oxygen levels in water, making it hard for survival of animal and plant population in the water. These oil spills do not only affect the marine system but also the chronic urban contamination and the economic loss. The oil spill has total effect on marine life despite the distance from the oil spill. The closer the oil spill is to the shoreline, the more damage it causes. The effects are also felt toward the offshore and the coastal environment. Oil spill is an accidental or intentional release of liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment. The environment is onshore or offshore leading to pollution. Mostly the key pathway of oil spills is through the marine oil spills. In this pathway, oil is released into the aquatic environment. The process is through spills from tankers drilling rigs and wells. Naturally oil may enter the marine life through oil seeps. The effects of oil spills are in many cases long-term effects. The short-term effects, though, can also be disastrous. Oil spills are dependant on wind and currents for faster spreading. When oil mixes with the water, it forms a sticky substance known as mousse. This substance clings to whatever it comes into contact with since it is sticky. Some marine animals mistake it for food. Birds usually have a hard time flying after coming into contact with the mousse. The mousse makes the birdsââ¬â¢ feather heavier, making it impossible for the bird to fly thus drowning. The bird also becomes vulnerable to predators since it cannot fly. Predators that feed on these dead birds also end up dying due to poisoning by the mousse (McCoy Salerno, 2010). The oil enters into the plumage structure of the bird and reduces the insulation capability. The bird is thus exposed to temperature fluctuations and less buoyant in water. The birds ingest the oil on the feathers, and this causes kidney damage and malfunction of the liver. A very small percent of birds exposed to oil spills survives unless there is an intervention by a human (Peter Smithson, 2002). The marine mammals that are largely affected by oil spills consists of the Seals, sea lions, polar bears, sea otters, whales, dolphins, and manatees. This is due to their adaptation main power in fur and blubber. The mammals living in a cold environment are mostly affected by hypothermia. Other effects include organ malfunction due to toxic exposure. The organ malfunction consists of interstitial emphysema gastrointestinal ulceration. The mammals encounter a lot of stress due to restriction of diet and continuous exposure to oil. Seals are highly vulnerable to oil spills since they spend much of their feeding time near the surface of the water. Fur seals are exposed to oil adhering to the fur. The adhering leads to the fur loosing insulation ability. The oil coating on fur seals results also in reduction in swimming ability and a lowered mobility of the seals on land. The seals are also affected by poisoning caused by feeding on already contaminated prey and inhalation of oil droplets. Sea otters usually spend their time on the water surface and are totally dependant on fur for isolation and float ability. The famous Exxon Valdez disaster is blamed to be the main cause of 15,000 otters, due to ingestion of oil. Polar bears depend on blubber and a thick under fur for insulation. They often groom their fur. While grooming oil contaminated fur, polar bears may swallow oil, resulting to death due to intoxication. The intoxication damages the kidney and lowers the ability to produce red blood cells in polar bears. Whales are rarely affected by oil spills as they are always on migration. Baleen whales are the only whales affected as oil stick to the whales when they are filtering their feed. They take a large amount of water in order to select their catch. A dolphin is a smooth-skinned and hairless mammal. Therefore, there is less possibility of oil sticking to their skins. In this case, the dolphins are affected by the inhalation of oil vapor. The inhalation damages the dolphinsââ¬â¢ airways and lungs. The other minor effect is the dolphinsââ¬â¢ eyesight and unending stress. Manatees and dugong are found in areas with warm waters; also depend on a layer of blubber for insulation. Their effect by oil spills is similar to that of the dolphins. Oil spills damages the turtle airways when they surface on top of water contaminated by oil slick. Their feed is affected also affected by oil spills and thus poisons the turtles. The areas that the turtles nest in the beaches are sandy. Oil contamination on the nesting sites leads to contamination of the eggs inhibiting proper development. Fish, one of the largest populations in the marine life ingest oil through their gills. This ingestion often leads to enlargement of the liver and reproduction capacity. In the Gulf of Mexico, there is an alarming rate at which the fish are dying due to the effect of oil spills and contamination. The death of fish is due to skin lesions, fin rot and liver blood clots in the fish surrounding the environment (Margaret Judith, 2010). The only effect on shellfish is not direct. The effect is indirect, since the affected is the person feeding on the shellfish. Shellfish exposure to oil spills leads them to acquiring an extremely unpleasant taste and makes it impossible to be eaten. The effects of oil spills on plants vary with every species of plant. The most common effect in all the species is the coating effect. This is because almost all plants depend on their leaves for production of food. The coating of oil on the leaves makes it impossible for the plant to have proper exchange of gas with the environment and production of food. This effect leads to slower growth rate of plants and in some cases quick death of the plant. Oil spills contamination leads to the death of algae and plankton. The large number of plants dying leads to excessive addition of ammonia and nitrites in the water. Conversely, levels of dissolved oxygen lower just as the pH levels. The changes in water chemical composition lead to toxicity of environment as a whole. Oil spills contribute in extremely large portion of polluting the environment. Proper measure should be put in place to avoid such mess. The measure accounts from government policies proper and self-regulatory measures per each person. This can be achieved through proper education of the society on the dangers of oil spill pollution and strict government policy to ensure that person complies. The hotel industry should also be cautious with the type of sea food that they sell. Proper Seafood Sensory Training is recommended for them to enable them detect oil in seafood. Float oil barriers should be used around the affected area, especially the ones with strong currents. Any incidence of oil spillage leads to possible death of either the marine animal or plants. Therefore, the source of this pollution should be dealt with as it may take many years to clean the effect.
